We can all agree that childhood obesity and obesity in general is constantly becoming a bigger (pun intended) problem in our society, what we don’t all agree on is the ways to deal with it. I’ve already talked about how us adults can deal with it a little bit here but what about stopping the problem before it becomes a problem? How about stopping it while the obese are still children so they don’t have to battle with it once their older?
Logically the people who should front this initiative are the parents, but can they really? Isn’t it partly the parents fault in the first place? You can’t pretend to care about your child’s health and constantly be feeding them mcdonalds happy meals.
So I think since the mass majority of parents are simply to incompetent to to their children out of obesity the only other place that could really do it is the school system.
The schools in the areas I live in have made some steps towards this end. By some steps I mean they have stopped selling pop, which is a step, but much much more has to be done. The only real difference now is that since the school only sells juice and water the kids have to walk for 10-15min to get some pop, which is exercise, so it is slightly helping them. This only works until the kids are maybe 16,17 years old when they can then drive for the pop. Also many kids have gotten into just buying 24 can cases of pop, storing it in their lockers and selling them to make roughly 50-75% profit, which is pretty successful for a 15 year old. I’ve heard that even the teachers will partake in this black pop market. So effectively all getting rid of pop has done is taken a source of income away from the already dreadfully underfunded school system, but more on that later.
Here is what I purpose: Make Phys ed class mandatory all the way from kindergarten to the end of high school. And not just the mandatory that they have now where they are forced to go from k-grade 10 and get marked on their participation more then anything. I mean make them need the credit or class to advance to the next grade in school, and make them have to pass tests that will need them to be in at least half decent shape. Imagine being held back a grade because you are required to run for 15min straight and couldn’t do it? This kid would feel just horrible about themselves and be forced to continuously repeat that grade until they can pass the phys ed test. But also set certain numbers of push-ups or sit-ups, arm hangs, the possibilities are endless and kids will be forced to keep in ok shape in order to progress through school.
Lets put this in prospective for a minute. Johnny fat fuck has a 200 point IQ and has been accepted to whatever school he wants to get into, wouldn’t it be a shame if he didn’t graduate high school because he can’t run for a half-hour straight? With no other classes to worry about he could dedicate all his time to getting in shape, hopefully noticing how much better he feels and sticking with it for the rest of his life. And kids would like it, playing sports like soccer could become almost homework because of the conditioning it would give you, running around the park could damn near be called homework.
I know that this system would have problems and generally plain out be rejected by people with concerns such as:
“The school system is too underfunded to place a program like this in place”
Trust me I know, the school system would need much more money to afford all the people repeating grades and classes until they get in good enough shape to move on, higher taxes would be needed, and during the current economic crisis nobody wants to hear that, but in the end aren’t your children worth it?
“Our son Johnny fat fuck is a genius, he should be able to advance despite his weight problem”
If he was so smart wouldn’t he know how to keep his weight in control? Its as simple as watching what you eat and maybe exercising sometime, looks like he has some things left to learn.
“Our child was held back and instead of it motivating him to try harder to get in good shape he has become depressed and is just eating more”
Put him on depression pills or just don’t let him eat even more, be parents for fucks sake.
“This program is mean and unfair, you can’t discriminate against my child for their weight problem”
This isn’t discrimination, it is mandatory for your kid to be in half decent shape to advance through school. You don’t see retarded people with high school educations, it isn’t because they are discriminated against, it’s because they don’t have the requirements to advance, just like your son Johnny fat fuck. Luckily for you your son isn’t retarded, just fat, he can work it off.
Negative criticism can be the more powerful way to change how somebody acts. If somebody does something wrong and you say “You did that wrong, but its okay you’ll do better next time” where is the motivation? If somebody does something wrong and you say “Why did you do that? Are you retarded?” The person can think to themselves “I’m not a retard, I shouldn’t do that again.” This system could motivate children in the same way.
