Since most people here don’t really pay attention to canadian news stories let me tell you the story of April Dawn Halkett. She gave birth to a baby in a bathroom stall of the local Wal-mart, left the baby to die, and yesterday was found not guilty of child abandonment. You can find the whole story about her being found not guilty here.
Now it is time for my rant. How the bloody hell is that not child abandonment? If you look up the word abandon in a dictionary the first words in the definition ate “to leave” which seems like exactly what she did. And it shouldn’t stop there, leaving the baby head down in the toilet, under water should also count as attempted murder, but no lets just charge her with the bare minimum and not even find her guilty of that.
Also since this has happened she has had another child, and is pregnant with another one(can’t find a link to where I heard this). No article I’ve read has mentioned her having any kind of job. So this leaves two different possibilities, either she has a career and it simply wasn’t mentioned anywhere,or she is doing the native thing and not ever getting a job and continuously having more children to get more money out of the government. Sadly to say after my experiences in Regina I’m going to have to assume its the latter. Which also raises another question, should the lady who left a baby in a wal-mart toilet even be allowed to have kids? I’m not sure if the justice system can legally get her tubes tied or force her to not have kids some other way, but it seems almost necessary here, or at least take her kids away for their own safety.
But alas, this is Canada, where the justice system is a joke and damn near everybody walks no matter how much they deserve jail or how bad their crime was. April Dawn Halkett is just the latest example.
